Below you will find some recommendations from our Storytime Team to prepare your little one for starting school for the first time. Making your own story book with an outline of the school day, and photos of their school, bag and uniform is also a great way to help set them up for a smooth transition.

Here's a downloadable craft activity, which can also be used as a tool you can use to remind your child what needs to go in their school bag.

What do you need to take to school? This craft will help you remember what you need.

For this craft you will need:

  • Copy of the craft template printed on cardboard or paper
  • Pop sticks, straws or other sticks (6 or more)
  • Glue stick or craft glue
  • Sticky tape
  • Scissors
  • Crayons, pencils or textas

Directions:

  • Cut out your bag and pocket.
  • Glue the pocket onto your bag, but only around the sides and bottom.
  • Cut out the pictures of your school supplies.
  • Tape them to the top of the pop sticks.
  • Draw a face or decorate your school bag however you like.
  • Put your school supplies in the pocket.
