What if? writing competition for young people

What If Writing Competition 2023

The judges were impressed by the originality and thought put into the entries for this competition and would like to commend every young person who entered. We hope you enjoy the winners’ pieces, and would like to encourage all young authors to keep practicing their craft and expressing their thoughts, ideas and imaginations.

Story writing applications were judged by Councillors Jane Russo and Jennifer Bonham, and Unley Libraries staff.

Criteria for Judging

  • Theme: Writing touches on the impact of global issues such as climate  change, equity, technological advancements, etc. on young people in an original and creative way.
  • Connection to Unley: Writing includes a real or imagined connection to the City of Unley, through setting, lifestyle, characters etc. 
  • Writing style: Story is logical and interesting, characters are believable.

 

Categories

Ages 12 - 14 Years - Short story or beginning of a longer story, or screenplay. Up to 1000 words

1st Prize: J. Finch - What if ... Robots?

2nd Prize: J. Turner - What if He Survived?

Ages 15 - 18 Years - Short story or beginning of a longer story, or screenplay. Up to 3000 words

1st Prize: L. Wang - What if We Chose to Love? 

2nd Prize: E. Wilson - Our Displaced Planet
