The goal of the route is to provide a safe and efficient bike route suitable to a range of experience levels. The route runs along Rugby Street and Porter Street for a length of 2.7km in the City of Unley (plus an additional 1km within Mitcham). These streets form part of the City of Unley's 40km/h speed limit area, allowing for suitable conditions for cyclists and motorists sharing the road.
Improvements have been undertaken at seven intersections, with the focus on addressing higher risk conflict points (such as roundabouts and intersections with busier roads), as well as reducing the number of locations where those who cycle need to stop. By changing the traffic priority at four intersections, within the 2.7km stretch in Unley, cyclists only need to stop and give way at three locations.
Construction was completed in June 2020. We will now begin to review the effectiveness of the upgrades and consider any other future improvements along the route when our Walking and Cycling Plan in is updated in 2021. The City of Adelaide are currently undertaking design for their North-South Bikeway, which will link with the Rugby-Porter Bikeway to l provide a continuous route from Mitcham to Prospect.
