Street cleaning schedule

Keeping the precinct, streets, and footpaths clean and tidy isn't just about maintaining appearance, it is an important part in managing our impact on the environment.

Residential streets

Residential roads (local roads) are cleaned on a 6 week cycle. Each street is programmed to be swept on a particular day of the scheduled week.

Sometimes circumstances may prevent the team from delivering the service on the scheduled day and the team will endeavour to sweep the street as soon as possible after the scheduled day and ideally no later than 48hrs. Circumstances include but are not limited to weather, public holidays, vehicle breakdown or other environmental factors.

Enter your address below to find out when your street will be next cleaned.

Street cleansing services

The Street Cleansing Service includes the cleaning and/or sweeping of:

  • Roads and laneways
  • Key precinct areas
  • Footpaths and shared paths
  • Side Entry Pits (SEP’s)
  • Car parks, bus stops and tennis courts
  • Community events

Our streets are classified as arterial, collector or local. Each street is allocated a cyclic cleansing program based on traffic volume.

Other factors that may impact the frequency or priority of the schedule include climate and seasonal changes, adverse hot weather, high winds and heavy leaf fall.

If you have an urgent request, please contact us on (08) 8372 5111. The response time to these requests is based on location and risk.

The arterial roads are the main roads, and roads with heavy traffic, that bound or run through the City. These roads are swept on a fortnight cycle.

Arterial roads

Arterial roads are swept on a fortnightly cyclic program and include:

  • Unley Road
  • King William Road
  • Cross Road
  • Fullarton Road
  • Goodwood Road
  • South Road
  • Anzac Highway
  • Glen Osmond Road
  • Greenhill Road
  • George Street
  • Duthy Street

The collector roads are streets that connect key areas of the City. While they still have a high use, they do not have the level of traffic volume experienced by the arterial classification of roads. These roads are swept on a 3-week cyclic program and include:

Collector Roads

The collector roads are streets that connect key areas of the City. While they still have a high use they do not have the level of traffic volume experienced by the arterial classification of roads.

Collector Roads are swept on a 3-week cyclic program and include:

  • East Avenue
  • Mitchell Street
  • Park Street
  • Wattle Street
  • Fisher Street
  • Ferguson Avenue
  • Leader Street
  • Leah Street
  • Victoria Avenue
  • Victoria Street
  • Arthur Street
  • Northgate Street (between Unley Road and Victoria Avenue)

Heavy leaf fall programs

Heavy leaf falls occur up to approximately nine months of the year, primarily between December and July.

During the heavy leaf periods, Council operates an additional street sweeper and the sweeping frequency increases to once every 3 weeks.

The footpath sweeping schedule also increases to target areas with excessive heavy leaf and increased safety concerns across the City of Unley.

Many footpaths are inaccessible by the footpath sweeper and these streets are cleansed manually by staff using blowers and are aligned with the street sweeping schedule so that the sweeper can follow the team.

Our street cleaning map(PDF, 2MB) shows how the City is divided into six zones. Each main zone is divided into five smaller sections which correspond with street sweeping schedule days.

As of 1 September 2024, some of the timing of street sweeping has changed for residents in Zones 1, 2 and 5 to avoid issues with waste and recycling pickups.

Please note: Council is now offering a text messaging service to notify residents of the timing of sweeping in their streets.

If you would like to be notified by text message when your street is to be swept, please call Council's Customer Service team on 8372 5111 and this service will be arranged for you. You can cancel this service at any time.

Vehicle parking during street sweeping

Please park your vehicle off-street, where possible, when sweeping is scheduled for your street/zone.

Streets which are consistently parked out that restrict and limit the ability to adequately sweep the street will periodically be cleaned using temporary parking controls.
